Lynton takes part in University of Pennsylvania laser cleaning workshop

Lynton's conservation specialist, Dr Martin Cooper, and chairman, Dr Andrew Charlton, were invited to take part in the 'Laser Cleaning Workshop for Art and Architecture' which was held last October in Philadelphia at the School of Design, University of Pennsylvania. The workshop was attended by over 80 conservators, collection managers, architects, masonry contractors, and construction managers who had the chance to try out our Compact Phoenix system and learn about the current state of laser cleaning technology and its applications within the heritage field.

Liebieghaus Museum takes delivery of Compact Phoenix system

After successful laser cleaning trials on a number of objects, including the stunning 15th-century Rimini altarpiece (alabaster), conservators at the Liebieghaus Museum (Frankfurt am Main, Germany) took delivery of a new Compact Phoenix NdYAG laser cleaning system in August. The Liebieghaus is home to a superb collection of 3,000 sculptures dating from ancient Egypt to Neoclassicism and is one of the world’s most prominent museums specializing in sculpture.

Lynton installs first Compact Phoenix system in Romania

Last month Lynton travelled to Craiova in Romania to install a Compact Phoenix system in the impressive restoration laboratories of the Museum of Oltenia. Dr Martin Cooper spent two days at the museum training conservators and carrying out tests on a range of objects and materials including ceramic, stone and metal. We hope this will be the first of many laser cleaning systems in Romania.

Conservators at Liverpool's world-renowned Conservation Centre (part of National Museums Liverpool) have been using a Lynton laser cleaning system in a successful conservation treatment of a Roman mosaic. The 4th-century AD mosaic discovered in Medbourne, Leicestershire, in the18th-century was thought to have been completely lost until recently when a piece of the mosaic was discovered in the storage area of the museum. The laser was used to gently clean dirt from the surfaces and vertical edges of the fragile white (limestone), red (terracotta) and blue (whinstone) tesserae, without disturbing the surrounding mortar. De Vink Restoration uses Compact Phoenix laser to clean zinc sculpture

De Vink Restoration in the Netherlands hired one of our Compact Phoenix systems for one week to carry out tests on a number of different surfaces, including marble, limestone and brick, and to clean a historic zinc sculpture; dirt and corrosion from the original galvanised copper surface treatment were gently removed from the surface of the zinc without damaging the statue's historic surface.

In October we attended the 11th International Conference on Lasers in the Conservation of Artworks in the beautiful Polish city of Cracow. The conference was well attended by conservators, conservation scientists, scientists and architects from around the world who gathered together to hear about the latest research, developments and case studies showing applications of laser technology within the conservation field. Our very own Dr Martin Cooper, who is a member of the Permanent Scientific Committee of LACONA, was honoured to chair a session highlighting some of the latest developments in instrument design.
